The Electoral Commissioner of Uganda, Anthony Okello, expressed commendation for Ghana’s elections, highlighting its commitment to a credible electoral process. Speaking on GhanaWeb TV’s Election Desk on December 7, 2024, Mr. Okello, acting in an observational capacity, emphasized the significance of Ghana’s robust verification protocols, which serve as a benchmark for other nations across Africa. He stated, “I have been here since the opening of polls, and I want to thank the people of Ghana for their approach they are using. I learnt a lot of interesting facts with my team.”
Okello underscored the critical aspect of validating all ballot papers prior to distribution, which he believes enhances the authenticity of the electoral outcome; this process ensures that any irregularities, such as unvalidated ballot papers, can be promptly identified. He further acknowledged the necessity of Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs) that prevent unauthorized voting, thereby bolstering the integrity of the electoral exercise.
He noted, “I think this is good because you are relying on the machine for verification, and you want to ensure credibility, and you will not have strangers. Those who have not registered in that polling station cannot vote because you verify them using a code which is in the voters register, probably using the facial features of that person. I think this is all very good, and it is a talking machine and everybody can hear that person has been validated,” he elaborated.
This praise from Commissioner Okello sheds light on the effectiveness of Ghana’s electoral measures, fostering discussions on the importance of such systems in streamlining electoral integrity throughout the African continent.
The discussion surrounding electoral processes in Africa has gained traction, particularly in the wake of emerging democratic practices within the continent. Ghana has positioned itself as a leader with its meticulous electoral management, characterized by comprehensive verification systems aimed at mitigating fraud and ensuring voter integrity. The insights from the Ugandan Electoral Commissioner reinforce the idea that such approaches can influence improving electoral systems in other African nations.
In summary, Anthony Okello, the Ugandan Electoral Commissioner, commended Ghana’s electoral system for its credibility and transparency during a recent interview. His observations regarding robust verification processes and the use of Biometric Verification Devices highlight the advancements made in Ghana’s elections. Such endorsements serve as a model for other countries striving to enhance their electoral integrity and foster democratic principles.
