Armed Robber Sentenced to 30 Years Following Marondera Theft Incident

An armed robber involved in a significant theft from businessman Wicknell Chivayo’s in-laws has received a 60-year prison sentence for six counts of armed robbery. Bigboy Nampungo, who is 27 years old and hails from Chitungwiza, will serve an effective 30 years as half of his sentence will run concurrently with the initial three counts.

Nampungo’s accomplices, Garikai Shangwa, Temptation Dinhidza, Arnold Tafirei, Tawanda Mushayatu, Mike Mhaka, Maramba Vhiya, and Takudzwa Maisvoreva, remain in custody pending further legal proceedings. They are contesting the charges against them.

During the trial, Nampungo pleaded guilty and detailed the robbery incident at Chivayo’s in-laws’ Alpha and Omega Farm, which occurred on March 18, 2025, at approximately 1 AM. He admitted to robbing six individuals on the property, including several security guards.

The gang executed a premeditated plan to rob the premises with dangerous weapons, including rifles and pistols, and attacked the security personnel brutally. They tied up the guards and forced their way into the main house where they demanded cash and valuables, eventually stealing an estimated total of US$74,000.

As per the allegations presented in court, during the robbery, the accused confronted multiple guards, assaulted them, and coerced them into surrendering cash and valuables from the safe before fleeing the scene when confronted by armed persons trying to intervene.
