U.S. Imposes Sanctions on Russian Network Supporting Yemen’s Houthis

On Wednesday, the United States Department of the Treasury announced sanctions against a network based in Russia, which is allegedly involved in supplying weapons and commodities to the Iran-backed Houthi movement in Yemen. This group is also reported to have connections with the procurement of stolen Ukrainian grain.

The sanctions specifically target individuals such as Afghan businessman Hushang Ghairat and his brother Sohrab Ghairat, who are said to have facilitated the acquisition of millions of dollars’ worth of goods for Sa’id Al-Jamal, a senior official within the Houthis. The commodities shipped to Houthi-controlled areas included weapons and various sensitive materials.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated, “The Houthis remain reliant on Sa’id Al-Jamal and his network to procure critical goods to supply the group’s terrorist war machine.” He emphasized that the actions taken reflect the United States’ commitment to disrupt the activities of the Houthis, which contribute to regional instability.

The recent sanctions imposed by the United States on a Russian network illustrate a critical effort to curb the supply chain supporting the Houthi movement in Yemen.
