On March 28, 2025, the Governments of Liberia and China signed a significant Economic and Technical Cooperation agreement aimed at jointly implementing diverse projects throughout Liberia. The agreement was finalized by Liberian Foreign Minister, Sara Beysolow Nyanti, and Chinese Ambassador to Liberia, Yin Chengwu. The primary goal is to enhance collaboration across various sectors, promoting peace, stability, prosperity, and sustainable development within the nation.
Chinese Ambassador Yin Chengwu emphasized that the agreement illustrates China’s enduring friendship and strong support for Liberia, embodying China’s commitment to outcomes from the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Beijing Summit. He noted, “This agreement is about assistance, and the agreed-upon funding will be allocated to projects jointly determined through bilateral consultations.”
Ambassador Yin further mentioned that during the FOCAC Beijing Summit, President Xi Jinping announced ten partnership action initiatives to bolster modernization in Africa. To support these initiatives, he stated that China intends to provide RMB 360 billion in financial support over three years, with 80 billion allocated for various assistance forms.
He reaffirmed the strategic partnership established last year between President Xi and President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, highlighting that this agreement exemplifies the mutual support essential for enhancing bilateral relations. The Ambassador expressed confidence that this agreement will foster practical cooperation between the two nations and advance Liberia’s ARREST Agenda of Inclusive Development.
In her response, Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti extended her gratitude to China for the partnership, stating, “We see this agreement as a plus to do more for our people. China is a strategic partner to Liberia, and we will continue to be friends.”
