Ethiopia Launches 100 Electric Buses to Enhance Public Transport in Addis Ababa

Ethiopia has launched 100 electric buses in Addis Ababa as part of its initiative to promote electric mobility. Assembled locally, these buses feature advanced technology and aim to improve public transport while minimizing environmental impact. The initiative reflects a broader strategy to transition to electric vehicles across the nation.

The introduction of 100 electric buses in Addis Ababa marks a pivotal initiative in Ethiopia’s transition to electric mobility. This move, organized by the Addis Ababa City Administration, aims to enhance the public transport system and reduce environmental impact, as reported by Xinhuanet.

Assembled locally at the Belayneh Kindie Metal Engineering Complex, these buses incorporate technology from China, including innovative Intelligent Transportation and Fare Collection Systems, contributing to a modern public transport infrastructure.

Currently operational on new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes, these buses not only facilitate convenience for commuters, but also adhere to environmental standards by producing zero emissions. They are designed to accommodate a considerable number of passengers and ensure a comfortable travel experience, according to Alemu Sime, Ethiopia’s Minister of Transport and Logistics.

The Minister also highlighted that the electric buses will utilize designated bus lanes, which will enable quicker commutes among residents. This initiative is anticipated to alleviate the existing transport deficits while promoting a competent, efficient, and sustainable transport option for the city’s populace.

The Ethiopian Ministry of Transport and Logistics reported that there are presently over 100,000 electric vehicles throughout the nation, with ambitions to expand this number to 500,000 in the next ten years. The overarching goal is to supplant 95% of gasoline-powered vehicles with electric vehicles.

To expedite the transition to electric mobility, the Ethiopian government instituted a ban on the importation of gasoline and diesel vehicles last year, a decision spurred by a global increase in fuel prices.

The introduction of electric buses in Addis Ababa signifies a transformative step toward sustainable public transport in Ethiopia.
