Ethiopia Introduces 100 Electric Buses in Addis Ababa to Enhance Public Transport

The Addis Ababa City Administration has launched 100 electric buses to promote electric mobility in Ethiopia. These buses, assembled locally with Chinese components, boast advanced technologies and zero emissions, enhancing public transport and commuting efficiency. The Ethiopian government plans to significantly increase electric vehicles nationwide while banning imports of gasoline and diesel vehicles.

The Addis Ababa City Administration has recently introduced 100 electric buses to the capital, Addis Ababa, as part of a broader initiative to promote electric mobility in Ethiopia. The buses are assembled locally by Belayneh Kindie Metal Engineering Complex with components sourced from China. Equipped with advanced technologies like an Integrated Intelligent Transportation System and Fare Collection, these buses aim to enhance public transportation.

The electric buses will serve the new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route, providing residents with a more convenient commuting option. Ethiopian Minister of Transport and Logistics Alemu Sime emphasized the environmentally friendly nature of these buses, highlighting their zero emissions and capacity to offer a comfortable ride. The dedicated bus lanes will also contribute to quicker transit times for commuters.

The introduction of these buses will address the current public transport shortage in Addis Ababa, enhancing commuting efficiency while promoting sustainable travel solutions. According to the Ministry of Transport and Logistics, over 100,000 electric vehicles are already operational in Ethiopia, with plans to increase this number to 500,000 by the next decade, significantly reducing the reliance on fuel-powered vehicles.

To facilitate this transition, the Ethiopian government has implemented a ban on importing gasoline and diesel vehicles, aiming to shift towards electric mobility amid rising global fuel prices.
