Three Suspects Arrested for Illegal Mining in Klerksdorp

Three suspects from Zimbabwe and Mozambique were arrested for illegal mining at Shivan Mine Dam during an operation led by the Dr Kenneth Kaunda Illegal Mining Task Team. The authorities seized numerous explosives and mining equipment. The suspects face several charges and will appear in court shortly.

On March 27, 2025, three suspects, aged between 32 and 35, from Zimbabwe and Mozambique were apprehended for illegal mining activities at Shivan Mine Dam in Klerksdorp. This operation was executed by the Dr Kenneth Kaunda Illegal Mining Task Team in collaboration with the Explosive Unit, as part of their commitment to combat illegal mining operations in the region.

Colonel Adele Myburgh, the spokesperson for the North West police, indicated that authorities acted on a tip-off received prior to the operation. Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered numerous individuals engaged in illegal mining. When the suspects noticed the police presence, they attempted to flee; however, three individuals, two from Zimbabwe and one from Mozambique, were captured.

During the operation, law enforcement recovered various explosives, including 20 capped fuses, 20 blasting cartridges, and 120 meters of detonating cord. Additionally, 13 generators, two water pumps, and five mining drills were confiscated. The suspects are set to appear in the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court on March 27, 2025, facing charges that include unlawful possession of explosives and illegal mining.

Acting North West Police Commissioner, Major General Patrick Asaneng, commended the police for their dedication and successful efforts in this operation. He urged the public to report crimes, specifically via the South African Police Service (SAPS) Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or through the MySAPS application for confidential reporting. Asaneng also mentioned that incidents related to extortion could be reported to the Extortion hotline at 080 091 1011.
