Three Arrested in Klerksdorp for Illegal Mining Activities

Three suspects from Zimbabwe and Mozambique were arrested for illegal mining at Shivan Mine Dam during Operation Vala Umgodi in Klerksdorp. The police seized various explosives and equipment. The suspects will face multiple charges, including unlawful possession of explosives and illegal mining.

Three individuals, aged between 32 and 35 and hailing from Zimbabwe and Mozambique, were apprehended for engaging in illegal mining activities at Shivan Mine Dam in Klerksdorp. This action took place during the Operation Vala Umgodi, enforced by the Dr Kenneth Kaunda Illegal Mining Task Team, which was supported by the Explosive Unit to address concerns regarding illegal mining operations.

Colonel Adele Myburgh, the spokesperson for the North West police, indicated that authorities acted on a tip-off. Upon arriving at the mine, numerous individuals were observed participating in illegal mining. When law enforcement approached, many fled the scene; however, the police succeeded in arresting three suspects, identified as two from Zimbabwe and one from Mozambique.

During the operation, police discovered various explosives, which included 20 capped fuses, 20 blasting cartridges, and 120 meters of detonating cord. Additionally, they confiscated 13 generators, two water pumps, and five mining drills. The arrested suspects are scheduled to appear in the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court on 27 March 2025, facing charges that include unlawful possession of explosives, illegal mining, and violations of the Immigration Act of 2002, Section 49.

Major General Patrick Asaneng, acting North West Police Commissioner, praised the police for their diligence and commitment during this operation. He encouraged public involvement in crime reporting, suggesting the use of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or the MySAPS application for anonymous tips. Furthermore, he advised the public to report extortion-related incidents through the designated hotline at 080 091 1011.

The arrest of these three suspects highlights the ongoing efforts by South African authorities to combat illegal mining and related activities. The law enforcement agencies encourage community participation in reporting such crimes to enhance public safety. The commendation from Major General Asaneng underscores the importance of collaborative efforts between the police and the public in addressing illegal activities.
