Zelenskyy Engages UAE Leadership Amid Growing Peace Talks Momentum

This visit marks Zelenskyy’s first trip to the UAE since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.
Zelenskyy arrived in Abu Dhabi after attending a security conference in Munich. He highlighted that the primary focus of the discussions was the repatriation of Ukrainian captives, in addition to exploring opportunities for investment and expanding economic partnerships.
During their meeting, officials signed a landmark agreement aimed at easing access for Ukrainian goods in the UAE market. Yuliia Svyrydenko, Ukraine’s Economy Minister, termed this deal as historic, marking Ukraine’s first such agreement with a Gulf nation.
Zelenskyy’s trip coincided with the UAE hosting the biennial International Defense Exhibition and Conference, where both Ukrainian and Russian arms were showcased. This presence served to assert Ukraine’s role as a defender against aggression despite ongoing warfare.
Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha highlighted Ukraine’s defense capabilities, stating, “Our capacity now we could produce 4 million drones per year despite the war… I’m really proud, as a minister of a country in war, to visit the exposition.” This statement underscores Ukraine’s resilient defense industry in the current conflict landscape.
Amidst Zelenskyy’s official engagements, Russia’s deputy prime minister visited the UAE to strengthen ties between the nations. In parallel, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio plans a delegation for direct discussions with Russia on the war, although Ukraine will not participate in these negotiations.
