Meteorological predictions indicate that Cyclone Zelia could strengthen to a category three cyclone by Friday, coinciding with its anticipated landfall. The Bureau of Meteorology advises of possible gales producing damaging wind gusts reaching up to 120 kilometers per hour later today, along with heavy rainfall expected between Broome and Dampier.

Concerns for flash flooding have arisen due to intense rainfall expected from tonight, particularly in coastal and adjacent inland regions extending from Bidyadanga to Port Hedland. The risk of destructive wind gusts approaching 160 kilometers per hour may emerge as Zelia approaches the coast, expected by Thursday.

Kimberley Superintendent Leon Gardiner of the Department of Fire and Emergency Services emphasizes the importance of timely preparation, stating, “If we see winds … above 125kph we’ll escalate to a cyclone watch-and-act. This is when you should be finalising your preparedness activities, not starting them.”

Superintendent Gardiner also noted that remote areas could be significantly affected, and the Department is actively coordinating with pastoral stations, tourism operations, and local communities to ensure safety. Quick evacuations are already in progress, as exemplified by residents Bryan and Jenny Jenner, who were advised to leave their caravan park for their safety.

Port Hedland, home to the world’s largest bulk export port, is taking precautionary measures by evacuating ships to prevent damage to infrastructure.
