Tunisia Advances Renewable Energy Initiatives with 500 MW Solar Projects

Tunisia has signed contracts for 500 MW of solar photovoltaic projects as part of a larger 1.7 GW renewable energy initiative. The projects, expected to generate 1 TWh annually, include contributions from Qair International, Scatec, and Voltalia. Tunisia has made significant strides in its commitment to renewable energy by signing contracts for four solar photovoltaic projects with a combined capacity of 500 MW. Collectively, these projects will produce approximately 1 TWh annually, contributing roughly 5% to Tunisia’s total electricity supply.

The successful bids were awarded to three distinct developers: Qair International, Scatec, and Voltalia, who will each oversee the construction of 100 MW installations at locations including El Ksar in Gafsa, Mezzouna in Sidi Bouzid, and Menzel Habib in Gabes. Additionally, Qair International is set to develop a further 198 MW project in Sidi Bouzid, enhancing its role in advancing Tunisia’s energy landscape.

In expansion of its renewable energy efforts, Tunisia’s Ministry of Industry, Mines, and Energy is also planning to initiate bidding for two wind projects, each with an output of 75 MW, by March 2025. Furthermore, the nation is already underway with two 10 MW solar projects in Kasserine Governorate, led by Qair and Mazarine, and a 50 MW solar plant in Tozeur, with a budget of TND 135 million, being developed in collaboration with Scatec and Toyota subsidiary Aeolus.
